2005-2009) Virtual Citytabaimo

Kappa, Roma 2008, pp. 206-257 (Numero ISBN: 978-88-7890-910-6).

Sintex After a few years from the beginning of digital revolution in architecture, we think it is important to historically comprehend the role developed, in all its different declinations, by the Virtual City, a newly and interesting dimension of contemporary living.
From the early on-line communal nets in the 90′ (such as the pioneer experience of Amsterdam Digital City), to the contemporaneous researches trying to spatially represent cyberspace (e.g. the radical “liquid architecture by Marcos Novak”), from Active Worlds to Second Life and Google Earth, which theoretical and pragmatic forms do the virtual city take? Which aesthetics and which geometries are useful to create worlds to live in? Which are the design methods and technological process that shape cities in the web? And, finally, which is the epistemological and social leap determined by this virtual living?
Starting from simple two-dimensional representations of  first communities in the Internet (born essentially as meeting points and chat rooms, being basically textual places) these places gradually evolved - also thanks to the evolving modelling languages such as VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) -, arriving to actual complex, interactive and multidimensional Virtual Worlds, explored in real time by multiplayers. From the fairy-tale  aesthetics of  fantasy  worlds, to the rational cities of e-commerce that sell and promote any kind of good on the Web, from the highly profitable video game production for the “ludens avatar” to the cartoon style images of playful cities for kids, these communities are shaped by a  variegated semiotic plankton in which we can read Orwell’s video-obsessions,  rhetorical cyberpunk kitsch, adventurous post-atomic landscapes, charming labyrinthine landscapes like the ones described  by Borges, and much more.
The future of  virtual city is still open, accessible to new design process based on the idea  to broaden our space, therefore our mind.  Architecture can mainly contribute to give further sense to these places, developing an important role in spatial conformation. A space that for architects is like a landscape to model, not more definable like an abstract experimental laboratory, but a place that belongs, although with different features, to mankind and to the environment in which we live in; interactive communication and information surfaces that express one of the new substances of  “transmodernity”; changing virtual and real spaces of contemporary living.
